Junious A Daniels, 85 of Mahwah, formally of Ridgewood NJ passed away on March 10, 2021
Beloved friend, partner and devoted better half of Andrea Cagney.
Junious, known to his friends as Yogi,Sonny(younger days) and Pop Pop(grands and great grands)was born in Harlem, NY on June 27,1935 and raised in Englewood NJ, on Lewis St, where he was looked up to as a protector and older brother.
He graduated from Dwight Morrow High School where he excelled
in basketball, football and track. He studied at St Francis University, Loretto PA and was recently inducted into their basketball Hall of Fame.
Yogi joined the Army in peacetime and again excelled on their courts for the Army Special Services Division in Fort Lee, Virginia. A reader of 4 newspapers a day, he had a keen interest in both local and US history. As a veteran, he was a proud member of the American Legion Post #170 in Rochelle Park.
He worked at Owens Illinois in North Bergen where he broke barriers as the first African American in their mold shop. When Owens left NJ, he went to Colorite Plastics in Ridgefield and again bridged gaps between rank and file and management, as he strongly represented as a Union Shop Steward. In retirement, he was an election poll worker.
Yogi loved all sports at every level but was especially fond of The New York Giants and often retold the story of his attendance at the "Greatest Game Ever Played" in 1958.
He enjoyed traveling, and meeting new friends who connected with him via sports, golf, nature, gardening, or the military. He relished getting together with the friends from the old neighborhood, Englewood’s 4th ward and he proudly served on the Englewood Mackay Park Legacy Committee.
He was predeceased by his parents, Junious and Louise (Tiebout) Daniels and siblings, William, Judy and Marie and former wife, Louise (Ross) Daniels and toddler daughter Krysta. He leaves behind his children Kyle, Khalilah (Na’im) Evans,
Karla, Kasandra and Kendall along with grandchildren, Stacey (Katrina) Daniels, Krysta (Ricardo) Piper, Tanisha, Aminah Evans, Brady and Jack Daniels and four great-grandchildren. He also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Yogi will be missed by many, especially his afternoon tea buddies at MacMurphy's in Ridgewood, and his longtime Englewood friends and The Mackay Park Legacy Committee.
